Hello friends and family!
A thought that's been on my mind lately is focused around the scripture in 1 Corinthians 13:12
"For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known."
Paul describes himself looking through a glass, but I would go as far as saying, it's as if he's looking at a mirror. You can imagine that this mirror is a little smugged, dark, and presenting a blurry image. He can't quite see the whole picture but just a small part of it.
After reading this scripture, I wondered why the mirror was darkened and the more I thought... the more I could understand. We each have this individual mirror. Its the way that we see ourselves, or in other words, our self-image. Due to outside influences, the smugging occurs. The reasons behind the grime and dirt, could be because we aren't doing what is right, the guilt of past mistakes, or focusing on our short comings, our imperfections, trying to be someone we are not meant to be, forgetting our self worth and a million variations of that same evil theme.
The questions then come naturally...How can we make our mirror clear? To see the same reflection that God sees of us?
One of my favorite children's books, "You are Special" perfectly describes this. If you are unfamiliar, the focus of this book is helping children (of all ages 2-102) understand their value - not from the world's perspective, but from God's.
Wemmicksville is a land created by Eli, the "God" figure of the story. He creates each Wemmick in Wemmicksville uniquely, each with its own look and personality. Punchinello is the central character. When Punchinello strays from Eli, he begins to have problems. Only when Punchinello stays close to Eli does he clearly see how to walk through his life in Wemmicksville. In this story, Eli helps Punchinello understand how special he is-no matter what other Wemmicks may think.
The simple act of kneeling down and asking our Father in Heaven for help is what is necessary for us to see ourselves clearly. God knows exactly what the world is like, He knows what the hardships and trials we face and the feelings that go along with it. He is there waiting for you to talk. The stronger the relationship with Him, the more clear the image of ourselves becomes.
The time will come that our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ will come back... when we will be able to "know ourselves even as we are known". Let us not wait until then to wipe away the smug on our mirrors that we put up in the first place. If we keep a strong realtionship with God, do what He asks of us, we will be able to see ourselves as I like to say, "our true selves". I know that through the Lord's help and through the power of the Atonement we can start now in seeing ourselves the way our Father in Heaven sees us. We must remember who we belong to and why we are here. Having an eternal perspective is what will keep us motivated to endure to the end and eventually partake of the greatest gift of all, eternal life.
Remember your worth my loves,
Sister Huffaker
